LOS ANGELES, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Executives at television networks in the United States are increasingly turning to Britain and other places overseas for new show ideas. The Los Angeles Times reported on this recurring trend, which took off again with the Emmy-winning U.S. remake of the British comedy show "The Office." The Times reported that CBS will soon be remaking the BBC's "Viva Blackpool!," a musical mystery series featuring singing detectives. Also on the way to the U.S. as remakes are the family drama series "Cape Wrath" and the political comedy "The Thick of It," both of which are originally from Britain. The idea recycling trend has reportedly fueled speculation as to whether Hollywood has run out of creative steam. Other popular entertainment, like the recent film "The Departed" and ABC's "Ugly Betty" are originally from China and Columbia, respectively....

[Waukesha County, Wisconsin] J.B. Van Hollen has asked television stations in Wisconsin to pull a sleazy which lies about his record. Yesterday Falk supporters announced they would be running a television ad which lies about J.B. Van Hollen's prosecution of Stanley Newago in Bayfield County in 2000. The ad is factually inaccurate. Lawyers for the Van Hollen campaign sent a letter to broadcast television station managers across Wisconsin Friday, informing them that the content of the ad contains lies and therefore the ad should not air. "The Greater Wisconsin Committee ad is demonstrably false and defamatory," wrote Michael Crooks, Attorney for the Van Hollen campaign. "Moreover, the ad at issue does not constitute a "candidate use," and your station is under no obligation to keep it on the air....

Growing up in North Carolina in the 1970s, Kevin Martin?s television choices were extremely limited. His home received just five stations, including the big three broadcast networks. Growing up in North Carolina in the 1970s, Kevin Martin?s television choices were extremely limited. His home received just five stations, including the big three broadcast networks. But as recently as 2003, his parents, who were still living in the same house, could choose from among seven broadcast networks and hundreds of cable channels. They also had access to a virtually unlimited amount of news and information through the Internet. Martin, 38, who was appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in March, made this point two years ago?when he voted to approve changes to a handful of media-ownership rules, including a relaxation of the cross-ownership ban?to show how much the media landscape has changed in the last few decades....

Posted Monday, October 02, 2006 11:13:29 PM by Blog57 Team
Fast food companies are dominating television programming for toddlers, suggests a study published in the October issue of the journal Pediatrics. Susan Connor, a research manager for Cleveland's Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, said she was inspired to study the effects of advertising on toddlers when her three-year-old toddler began humming the McDonald's jingle. "He had absorbed that from watching TV," said Connor. "It would be a marketer's dream to know they were that successful." The study found that messages for high-fat, high-sugar foods abounded on the child-targeted Nickelodeon specialty channel, the Disney Channel and on certain child-focused shows such as Sesame Street on the Public Broadcasting Service. Both Disney and PBS, which promote their policy of ad-free programming, show corporate sponsor messages....

She sprays a bottle of water at the pair and strikes Mattes in the face with the plastic container....

Once there were giants in television news

I wonder how many high school age people watched the two-hour "American Masters" presentation about Ed Murrow on PBS last Wednesday night. Not many, I'd guess, given that it didn't start until 9:30. I wonder how many high school social studies teachers taped it to show to their classes come September. ....
