RS Plc, Thailand's second-largest entertainment group has diversified into sports content to achieve its goal of becoming a leading entertainment and sports-content provider. A new company will be officially opened later this month to focus on providing sport content and ''360-degree'' management, according to Surachai Chetchotisak, the chief executive officer, who declined to elaborate. But a source said the new company would likely seek exclusive rights to major international sporting events since its management team had joined hands with former staff of DhosPaak Communication Agency Co, the Thai holder of the World Cup broadcasting rights in 2002 and 2006. Mr Surachai said that out of the four categories in the content world _ games, news, entertainment and sports _ RS had expertise in only two: entertainment and sports....

MIKLASZ: Carp channels Gibby

On a cold Tuesday night in middle America, a rugged son of the Granite State took the mound and warmed up Busch Stadium by turning the Tigers' bats into a stack of firewood. Chris Carpenter was relentless. No, this wasn't Bob Gibson in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series, wiping out 17 Detroit Tigers with a vicious assault of strikeouts. Carpenter's performance in Game 3 of the World Series wouldn't qualify as epic, and the classic-sports TV channel won't be showing black-and-white replays of it 40 years from now. But Carpenter was virtually untouchable, charging through eight shutout innings and leading the Cardinals to a 5-0 victory. Gibson would be proud of Carpenter. And Carpenter, the Cardinals' most dominant righthanded starter since Gibby, did his best to live up to the glorious tradition, and the high standard, established by the one and only No....

Betting on poker

It was just two years ago that poker jumped from casinos and basements to cable channels including ESPN. Soon, a group of guys staring at cards and at each other was replacing traditional sports -- hockey, basketball and baseball -- on the tube. While it offered no crosschecks, slam dunks and home runs, more and more viewers were tuning in to Texas Hold 'Em poker and looking for ways to play and compete. "I picked it up to meet people and have fun," said the Rev. Nancy Mockros of Lafayette. "It's in Lafayette culture. It's a big thing in Lafayette. I knew so many people who played it in houses. I decided to bring it out." Mockros helped start a Texas Hold 'Em night at Hunter's Pub South, 3239 Daugherty Drive, one of several poker nights in Greater Lafayette bars and restaurants....
