Silent on ground, big bang in the sky

KOLKATA: The ground rules don't permit it. So they hit the sky. Firecracker manufacturers have gone a notch up this Diwali, literally. Instead of bursting crackers on the ground — which is banned — they have chosen the aerial route. The impact has obviously been greater, with complaints pouring in through Saturday and Sunday while law enforcers and Pollution Control Board officials watched helplessly. "The rule is very clear. The noise level should be 90 decibels within a radius of five metres on the ground. Naturally, we cannot take action against people who use these loud fireworks that travel to heights of, say, 40 feet and then burst to produce illuminated garlands in the sky,"said a senior PCB official. The cracker is burst at ground level with minimum noise....

Hereford 3 Sky Blues 1

The League Cup, in its variously sponsored guises, has regularly produced such outcomes down the years and Coventry were one of a string of Championship sides to bite the dust last night. * Join the debate. Tell us what you think about the match by emailing us or visiting our Sky Blues message board. A selection of messages will be published online and in the paper * But while the defeat could perhaps be shrugged off as one of those things that happen in knock-out football, what was truly shocking for the Sky Blues was the manner of their first-round exit. For the first time this season they were outplayed - genuinely unlucky to lose at Southampton and Cardiff in the league, they can count themselves distinctly fortunate that they didn't endure heavier punishment against a side who were operating three divisions below them this time last year....
