One generation ago, the June 1972 cover of National Geographic magazine featured a family from Independence in a boat race on the "newly cleansed waters" of a river restored: the Willamette. With a growing national reputation for environmental innovation, those were heady times for Oregon. But today the Willamette is far from a picture of health, with no real prospects for regaining it over any foreseeable timeline. Decades of well-intended but disjointed conservation efforts have not -- and will not -- ensure the health of our waterways. Why? We have a systems problem. Water and water quality dominate the top of every poll on environmental concerns. We care. But with our current means and methods, the long-term prospects for healthy waters are not good....

Ah, globalization. What seems charming and exotic in the pages of National Geographic becomes downright maddening when you're trying to get business done on deadline, while navigating the seemingly bizarre customs and social rituals of a foreign location. Whether you're an American project manager working in Shanghai, a German engineer on contract in the Middle East, or an Indian software developer trying to make it in Paris, the ability to work across cultures is becoming as important as engineering prowess—particularly as high-tech firms open more and more overseas facilities, engage in multinational projects, and outsource to companies in still other countries. Not to mention that, for engineers moving into management positions, overseas postings are often key to ascending corporate ladders....
