Movie Guide for Your Saturday 01/27

"Babel" begins with one character walking through the Moroccan desert to sell his rifle and ends with another character finding her footing on the balcony of a Tokyo high rise. In between, it meanders for a long time -- across continents and in various languages -- through scenarios that can be profound and profoundly self-important. It's a good film that might have seemed great if movies like "Traffic" and "Syriana" hadn't already set such an exceptionally high standard for intertwined stories about international angst and anguish."Blood and Chocolate"Rated: PG-13Grade: No grade. What the heck does chocolate have to do with werewolves? Maybe the curiosity factor is what the studio is counting on. It's not as if the story, which involves a young female werewolf who must choose between marrying the leader of her pack or eloping with a human hottie, breaks any new ground....

CHANNELS (Just Completed) - 'An Unconventional, Innovative, Utterly Romantic movie!'

Says who? Remember "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" head writer, Ann Marcus? She comes out swinging, putting her money on a movie she believes in. For a total budget of under $196,000, CHANNELS (a philosophical romantic comedy) was written, produced and directed by Nat Christian, and made in just 18 days. After reading through nearly a hundred screenplays (action, horror, thrillers, etc), Ann Marcus (Emmy Award-winner for "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman"; producer of hit TV shows, etc., and grandmother/great-grandmother of 10) dug into her purse and financed CHANNELS out of love for the story. A truly independent movie, CHANNELS stars Kim Oja, Nat Christian, Ed Asner, Joan Van Ark, Taylor Negron, John Kassir, and a group of talented actors....

Stars move easily from film to TV

The wall that used to separate movies and television has crumbled. No longer is doing television the sure mark of a has-been for a movie actor or director. "The line has changed," says Ryan Murphy, creator of FX's "Nip/Tuck," who writes movies in his spare time. "It used to be if you were on television, that's all you did. You were sort of ghettoized." Virginia Madsen knows about that. "Way back in the day, I crossed over and did a movie for HBO, which was thought to have been a huge mistake, a huge step down," Madsen says. "It did some damage to my career." ....

Target's Aim Isn't True

If it's good enough for Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT - News), it may as well be good enough for cheap chic rival Target (NYSE: TGT - News). Just as Wal-Mart has been presumably pressuring movie studios not to undercut DVD prices to digital downloading sites, Target also sent a stern letter to major movie producers, according to yesterday's The Wall Street Journal. ....

HD on Xbox: sweet

I've always been a techno-whore. I like things that are new and shiny and sci-fi. I especially like watching HD-TV channels on my cable box - you haven't seen Lost until you've seen it in glorious high-def. But even I don't feel compelled to plunk down a wad of cash for either flavour of the new high-def DVD players that have come out in recent months. With standalone HD-DVD players starting at $699 and Blu-ray players at $1,299, I need a more compelling reason to take the plunge than just being able to see all of Sharon Stone's wrinkles in Basic Instinct 2. Half the problem is that the format war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD is at an utter deadlock. Both fighters are flailing away in the ring while the audience tries to stifle its yawns. On top of that, movie selection is still so thin for both formats, and the first-generation players are so slow and buggy, it's truly only for the early adopters....

RHA to remove channels from graduate housing, university apartments this semester

Residents of Spartan Village, Cherry Lane Apartments and Owen Hall will no longer receive Residence Halls Association channels because they don't pay RHA taxes. Channels 11 and 12 will be broadcast through RHA exclusively to undergraduate residence halls on campus. "Our primary focus is undergraduate halls. Because Owen Hall is a graduate dorm, it doesn't have to pay RHA taxes," said Jeff Canvasser, director of RHA TV. RHA did not approach residents to ask if they wanted to pay the tax to keep the channels, he added. Owen Hall residents pay the Council of Graduate Students tax, or COGS, instead of RHA. No date is set for when the channels will be removed, however, Canvasser said residents will be notified about the date, which will happen this semester. Last year, RHA noticed Spartan Village received Channel 11, but not Channel 12, causing RHA to realize Spartan Village, along with Cherry Lane, did not pay RHA taxes, Canvasser said....

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) said on Tuesday it will launch a new Internet browser-based television service that will allow subscribers to watch 20 channels, including Fox News and the Weather Channel, on their computers. The live TV service, named AT&T Broadband TV, will be available to high-speed Internet users at $19.99 a month, adding to AT&T's line-up of video products to meet growing demand for mobile and over-the-Web entertainment. Although the service does not work overseas, AT&T said one target customer group would be U.S. travelers, who will be able to watch live TV on their laptops as long as their Internet connection speed is at least 500 kilobits per second. The new service faces competition from all corners of the media and technology world, from free Webcasts of prime-time TV shows such as "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" that are available on ABC's site, to movie download services like CinemaNow and online video services such as YouTube and Google Video....

Movie channels blocked after police raid cable operators

Mumbai, Aug. 22 (AP): Movie channels were blocked from television screens across India's entertainment and financial capital Mumbai on Tuesday after a police raid on cable TV operators showing movies deemed inappropriate for children. Police confiscated transmission equipment in a series of raids that ended Monday, shutting down several cable operators. The police raids prompted other operators in Mumbai to suspend the transmission of all programmes in protest. Police officer Sanjay Aparanti, who headed the crackdown, told the Hindustan Times newspaper that he was implementing a court order that warned operators to stop broadcasting any movie that is not cleared for viewing by children. In India, a government appointed Censor Board restricts movies for adult audiences if they contain any nudity, profane language or excessive violence, and they can be shown only in cinemas to viewers above 18 years old....

LOS ANGELES — John Mark Karr's return to the U.S. took him from clinking his champagne glass during a luxurious flight over the Pacific to a high-security jail where he was awaiting a transfer to face charges in JonBenet Ramsey's murder. Los Angeles police detained Karr on a warrant from Boulder County, Colo., after he arrived in California from Bangkok, Thailand, and turned him over to the county Sheriff's Department late Sunday, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. ....
