CHICAGO (ELCA) -- "Introducing Jesus of Nazareth" will air as a one-hour special on stations affiliated with the ABC television network. Managers of each station will determine the day and time of broadcast in a 60-day period beginning Dec. 3. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) produced the program as part of the Mosaic Television quarterly video series by ELCA Communication Services. Two other ELCA productions will air on the Hallmark Channel. Recorded in Israel and the West Bank, "Introducing Jesus of Nazareth" returns to the sights and sounds of Jesus' life -- from Nazareth and Bethlehem to Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan Valley, the Mount of Transfiguration, and finally to Jerusalem. It features interviews with ELCA pastors across the United States....

Eric Eidsness: plenty to say on the issues

Eric Eidsness said he considers energy independence to be the hallmark issue for his campaign. “The greatest national security and economic threat America faces today is our dependence on middle eastern oil and the fact that we have a twisted foreign policy around that dependency that makes us look like imperialists occupying a foreign land with the irony that our oil dollars are being used by Islamic extremists and the indigenous people in Iraq to wage war against us. “The solution to this is to pass and fully fund what I call energy independence diversity legislation which says it is the policy of the United States of America in order to provide for the common defense and security of its people to be independent from the need to import oil from the Middle East in 15 years....

Opponents of 'Fair Tax' ignore problems of current system

C.C. in Houston writes to say there is nothing fair about the Fair Tax plan for a single flat sales tax. He quotes a letter from another concerned citizen to the editor of the Houston Chronicle. ``The so-called Fair Tax scheme is a blatant attempt by the wealthy to reduce their tax payments. I call it the `unfair tax,' as it will tax consumption rather than income. Those in the lower- to middle-income brackets usually spend most all of their income on necessities and can't save. They would be taxed on practically 100 percent of their income. Retirees, whose income may require them to pay no taxes, would end up paying taxes on all of the money they spend, which would greatly reduce their purchasing power. ``On the other hand, those who make more than they spend, and indeed those whose incomes greatly exceed their expenditures, would pay taxes on significantly less of their incomes, proportionally....

Hallmark cards change their tune

Hallmark, the nation's leading card company known for its traditional values, is suddenly rocking. The company's new Sound Cards - the first line ever to use original songs from original artists - have young and old tuning into everything from Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Unveiled with a trial run of two dozen designs about a year ago, the Say It With Music line expanded to more than 220 with a July release. Christmas will bring seasonal cards, and a new wave will hit the stands in January. Hallmark hopes the undertaking pays off, boosting the bottom line of a company that had $4.2 billion in revenue in 2005. The company said Sound Cards have so far fueled a 9 percent increase in sales of everyday cards compared with 2005....

Company touts untraceable email service

A hallmark of Mission: Impossible was the message that would self-destruct after it was played. Now a startup communications company promises that same level of secrecy with a web-based messaging system designed to leave no traces. The VaporStream system from Void Communications LLC is envisioned as a complement to email and instant messaging, both of which leave abundant records. Let's say Alice wants to discuss something privately with Bob. Alice calls up a VaporStream web page, which is encrypted by the same method that secures internet commerce and banking. Then she selects Bob on her list of VaporStream chat partners. That brings up a new window, where she can type a message. Neither her name nor Bob's appears anywhere. The individual messages cannot be copied or pasted into other programs....

MOVE 'EM OUT

There's now a price tag on the three buildings standing in the way of redeveloping a key block of Jersey City's Journal Square - and the city plans to seize the properties if the owners don't sell. The buildings - one home to a KFC, one to a McDonald's and Song's Hallmark store and one vacant - are collectively worth $5.2 million, according to appraisers under contract with the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the entity overseeing the redevelopment of the block, next to the PATH Transportation Center. The agency's board voted Tuesday night to formally accept the appraisals and begin negotiations to purchase the properties. If agreement can't be reached with the owners, the agency will seize the properties through its powers of eminent domain, said JCRA Executive Director Robert Antonicello....

Wolfowitz corruption crusade creates waves
Posted Thursday, September 14, 2006 7:11:39 PM by Blog57 Team
In his first 15 months as president of the World Bank, Paul Wolfowitz has made the fight against corruption in poor countries a hallmark issue, waging an aggressive campaign that has led to the suspension of hundreds of millions of dollars in loans and contracts to nations including India, Chad, Kenya, Congo, Ethiopia and Bangladesh. It is a new incarnation for Wolfowitz, a neoconservative intellectual who was a primary architect of the Iraq war during four years as Deputy Secretary of Defence. At the World Bank Wolfowitz has maintained his assertive but soft-spoken style, saying recently that the bank's mission was "to send children to school, to help mothers be healthier, to provide jobs for poor people - not to have resources siphoned off into the hands of the corrupt and greedy"....

FBI Asks For Public's Help In Search For 'Hallmark Bandit'

LOS ANGELES -- The FBI sought the public's help Wednesday in apprehending the Hallmark Bandit, who is known for presenting long, threatening demand notes and having lengthy interaction with bank tellers and customers. The unidentified man, who is believed to be in his 30s, is a suspect in about six bank heists in Orange and Los Angeles counties since mid-May, said Laura Eimiller of the FBI. The suspect, who dons baseball hats and sunglasses and carries a black canvas shoulder bag, waits in the teller line until called. He then presents his demand note, which typically has some words in boldface, Eimiller said. ....

Positives: The Soda Shoppe has the best limeades and ice cream in town. Located inside of Hallmark, this is a great afternoon snack shop “My favorite part about the Soda Shoppe is their strawberry shakes because they're huge and they taste good – probably the best shakes in Hays," said senior Mario Lozoya. “They also have a wide variety of sandwiches." “The Soda Shop is the friendliest restaurant in Hays," said senior Dawn Eshbaugh. Negatives: It's not open very late, and when busy can take awhile for service, but is still worth the wait. read more Comment ....
