TiVo Series 3 Deal of the day: $699 from Costco
Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 1:33:07 PM by Blog57 Team
Well, it sure didn't take long for retailers to start dropping the price of Series3 TiVos. Granted, $699 is almost as bad as $799 for a standalone PVR box, but I know a lot of our readers were drooling at the Series3 before it came out -- and probably wiped the drool from their faces and went back to their Series2 boxes when they saw the price. So everyone wants to feel like they're getting a bargain if they're gonna shell out the big bucks for a new unit. With that said, the latest deal comes from Costco, where you can pick up a Series3 for $699. No word yet on whether this offer is available in retail stores, or just through the website. To recap some of the other deals, you can still get a Series3 box through the TiVo Community Forum store for $680, but that offer expires Sunday. And if you want a tricked out Series3 with an upgraded hard drive, or even just a regular 30-hour unit, you can get a variety of coupons from WeaKnees.Via TiVo Blog and TCF ....

Program Your TiVo with Yahoo! TV
Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 3:12:44 AM by Blog57 Team
Shandy King posted a thread at Search Engine Roundtable Forums letting us know that you can now use Yahoo! TV to program your TiVo to record shows for you. FYI - I do not own a TV, so I am not addicted to TiVo's but a lot of people are. To schedule programming, visit http://tv.yahoo.com/onlinesch/tivo/introscreen. What do you need to make this happen? A valid Yahoo! account with a yahoo.com e-mail address A valid TiVo user account A TiVo Series2 DVR So now what is the benefit of using Yahoo! TV over TiVo's interface? (1) Yahoo! gets to associate your TV watching preferences and history with your Yahoo! profile (2) If you are a Yahoo! user, you have one place to manage this stuff But number one is a biggy for bridging online ads and TV ads....

Indian Kid With Big Head, Huge Smile Dances For TiVo in Weird Video
Posted Sunday, October 15, 2006 11:17:04 AM by Blog57 Team
We've seen this at least three times at different web addresses but passed it off as just a freakishly weird video but now the video contains a TiVo status bar, sound effects, closing copy and logo. And, it now lives on the website of San Francisco-based Swivel Media lending more credence to the marketing angle of the clip. The video (an old Bollywood film) features an Indian-looking family sitting on a bed with an old-school boombox. The Dad turns the boombox on and off as one of the kids (or...dare we say, dwarf with a big head and freakishly weird smile), standing on the floor in front of the bed dances robotically, starting and stopping as the Dad starts and stops the music. Freakishly weird but additively entertaining. We contacted our friend Erik over at Swivel Media to confirm (yes, shockingly, we do that sometimes) this is, in fact, another weird promotion for TiVo and Erik tells us, yes, Swivel did create it in the sense they latched on to popular and strange clip and branded it with TiVo....

Mobile Phones to Gain TiVo-Like Features?
Posted Friday, September 08, 2006 1:12:19 PM by Blog57 Team
Watching TV on a mobile phone could get more interesting next year with new technologies that promise to bring TiVo-like recording functionality to portable devices. Texas Instruments is demonstrating PVR (personal video recording) capabilities for mobiles at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam this week. It is using its own Hollywood digital TV chip and OMAP 2 multimedia processor, along with software from partners PacketVideo and Software Systems (S3). The technology allows people to record a TV program on their mobile phone and then watch it later, on the train on the way to work, for example. The TI package also provides "picture-in-picture" capabilities, allowing a person to watch a prerecorded program and also track a live sports event in a smaller, on-screen window....

TiVo signs agreement with Omnicom, Q2 loss widens to $6.4M
Posted Thursday, August 31, 2006 3:11:42 PM by Blog57 Team
TiVo Inc. posted a much larger second quarter loss and announced a comprehensive advertising and research agreement with Omnicom Media Group on Wednesday. The Alviso-based company (NASDAQ:TIVO - News) reported a loss of $6.4 million, or 7 cents a share, compared to $900,000, or a penny a share, a year ago. TiVo, which provides television DVR services, said the higher loss was due primarily to costs associated with its intellectual property patent litigation with Littleton, Colo.-based EchoStar Communications Corp. (NASDAQ:DISH - News), more upfront hardware costs, and the expensing of stock options. Service and technology revenue grew 30 percent to $52.9 million, compared to $40.7 million for the same period last year. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected, on average, a loss of 14 cents a share on revenue of $51.3 million....

TiVo wins in DVRs patent ruling
Posted Saturday, August 19, 2006 7:09:18 PM by Blog57 Team
DISH Network satellite TV customers can continue using their digital video recorders for now, an appellate court ruled Friday, delaying another judge's order earlier in the day in a patent fight with TiVo. U.S. District Court Judge David Folsom had ruled Friday that EchoStar Communications, parent company of DISH network, willfully infringed on TiVo's patented ``time-warp'' technology. The ruling was a significant victory for TiVo, the San Jose-based company credited with changing the television viewing habits of millions of people. EchoStar Communications initiated an immediate appeal, which gave its customers a reprieve from Folsom's order to disable 4 million of its DVRs within 30 days. But the company also said it is working on modifications to its DVRs ``intended to avoid future alleged infringement.'' Folsom's decision also prohibits EchoStar from using TiVo technology without authorization and ordered the Colorado-based company to pay $89.6 million in damages....
