MIKE DUFFY'S TV TODAY: Cable channels roll out the Halloween-theme movies
Posted Tuesday, October 24, 2006 11:11:33 AM by Blog57 Team
"13 Days of Halloween" (8 p.m., ABC Family); same title at 6:30 p.m. Sci Fi; "Twitches" (8 p.m. Disney Channel). Cable people seem to have seized Halloween as their holiday. For years, ABC Family has had "13 Days of Halloween." That starts at 8 p.m. with "Corpse Bride." Tim Burton directed the 2005 animated movie, Danny Elfman composed the music and Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and more did the voices. Now the Sci Fi Channel has its own programming that it calls "13 Days of Halloween." (There are no points for originality.) It starts at 6:30 p.m. with "Christine," a terrific 1983 John Carpenter film, from a Stephen King tale about a killer car. Meanwhile, the Disney Channel has "Twitches," 2005, an enjoyable film with Tia and Tamera Mowry as long-separated twins who have special powers....

Former DALLAS star PATRICK DUFFY is terrified of his upcoming role in an English pantomime production this Christmas (06) because he's so bad at music. The 57-year-old actor, who played BOBBY EWING in the 1980s Texan oil drama, has signed up to play BARON HARDUP in CINDERELLA at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking, Surrey. But he's already warning audiences to be on their guard because he is "criminally bad at anything musical". He explains, "I may be the main part in a pantomime with plenty of singing going on but I don't do music." 07/10/2006 13:43 ....

DJ Trahan enjoyed a strong finish with three birdies in the final five holes as he retained a two-stroke lead at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic on Friday. Trahan, who matched his best round as a pro on Thursday with a 65, carded a four-under-par 68 to get to 11-under, maintaining a two-shot cushion over Brad Faxon and Joe Durant. "I hit the ball well and gave myself plenty of opportunities," Trahan said. "As well as I hit the ball today, I'm disappointed with not having made some more birdies." Faxon fired six birdies en route to a five-under-par 67 while Durant carded a seven-under 65. Swede Mathias Gronberg is another shot back on eight-under after his second consecutive 68. Much of the focus this weekend is on the American Express World Championship being held at The Grove near Watfordi, which features 20 of the 24 players who competed in the Ryder Cup....

PALMDALE - New home sales are down and Lancaster and Palmdale are issuing home-building permits at a slower rate, leading some officials to say that the Antelope Valley is experiencing a real-estate slowdown while others say it's a correction to more normal conditions. Between January and July, 1,447 new homes were sold - down 46percent from the 2,687 sold in the same period in 2005, according to data compiled by the real estate consulting and data company Hanley Wood Market Intelligence. "It's just a slowing down from a really frenzied market," said Patrick Duffy, managing director of consulting for Hanley Wood. "We typically tend to see those in suburban markets." Home builders sold 4,195 new homes in the Antelope Valley last year, the company said. By comparison, when the 1980s boom peaked in 1989, about 4,900 homes were sold - a number that plummeted to 2,700 the following year....

"Sesame Street" (10 a.m., WTVS-TV, Channel 56, PBS). Season premiere. Big Bird, Cookie Monster and all the rest of the friendly familiar faces are back for the 37th year of America's perennial preschool favorite. But there's also a brand-new kid on the block, Abby Caddaby, the first new female Muppet in more than a decade. Flashing little wings and a magic wand, Abby's a pink fairy-in-training whose catchphrase is "That's so magic." So is "Sesame Street," still an imaginative slice of early childhood magic. The Creek flows again "Dawson's Creek" (6 p.m., the N). Blast from the past. Long before she hooked up with Tom Cruise and a blizzard of tabloid attention, Katie Holmes played sweet charmer Joey Potter on the clever teen soap that became a breakout sensation for the WB in the late '90s....
