| | | Brightblack Morning Light Tour, Ready Matador Debut | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 7:45:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | A tour where concertgoers are asked to bring crystals to shows...that is SO freak-folk. But this is Brightblack Morning Light we're talking about, and when it comes to the freaky and the folky, nobody's got them beat, not even Devendra. I mean, these people call themselves names like "Nabob Shineywater" and "Rabinyah", and they allegedly live in tents in Northern California. Cementing their foresty cred, Brightblack were on a split single with Bonnie "Prince" Billy in 2002, had their 2004 debut album produced by Will Oldham's brother Paul, and have toured with Joanna Newsom, Vetiver, Entrance, and other woodland creatures. They also host Quiet Quiet, an annual "rural song gathering", which has featured Devendra Banhart, Michael Hurley, Faun Fables, and the like. In support of their upcoming self-titled second album, due June 20 on Matador, Brightblack Morning Light recently launched the Crystal Totem Turr, a summer mega-trek that will keep them occupied through early August.... | |

Lyne Bessette (Cyclocrossworld.com) was well warmed and ready to go for the women's race after having competed in the men's B race just beforehand. After the start and the first tour in the woods, she and Katerina Nash (Luna) renewed their battles from yesterday in the front of the field with the rest of the riders left to chase. Unlike yesterday however, Bessette could not get rid of Nash, as the two battled back and forth throughout the race. Bessette was in this position last weekend at Gloucester, when she was beaten by Georgia Gould after leading her the entire race.... | |

| | | Steve Reich: Phases: A Nonesuch Retrospective | | Posted Friday, October 06, 2006 1:12:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | When the history book is written on the minimalist scene that emerged in the 1960s, it's likely that composer Steve Reich will emerge as the most influential figure. Certainly artists including Philip Glass and Terry Riley have made extremely significant contributions to contemporary classical music and have evolved, like Reich, beyond the inherent constraints of the genre. But Reich's influence can be felt in music by artists as diverse as German bassist Eberhard Weber, guitar legend Pat Metheny and British progressive rock groups Soft Machine and Gentle Giant. Even Mike Oldfield's classic Tubular Bells had considerable precedent in Reich's work. Reich turns 70 on October 3, 2006, and it's rightfully being touted as a major event, with celebrations planned in both New York and London.... | |

| | | August 2006 | | Posted Sunday, August 27, 2006 7:17:40 AM by Blog57 Team | | Brooklyn's best-kept secret right now is the Center for Improvisational Music (CIM), which featured drummer Dan Weiss (Jul. 8th) in a trio setting with pianist Jacob Sacks and bassist Thomas Morgan. Sacks and Weiss are in fact co-leaders, bringing equal amounts of original material to the bandstand. Their CIM set began peacefully, with Sacks' adaptation of the Strauss lied ?Morgen?. But Weiss' ?Ode to Meshuggah? plunged the trio into a welter of precise, agitated rhythms and hair-trigger interplay?a mood that prevailed through much of the set. Weiss, a trained tabla player, has brought Indian rhythmic concepts into the very heart of his drumming and composing. He began ?Chakradar? by speaking konnakol (vocal percussion) in unison with Sacks' piano. On ?B.L.O.P.? (by Sacks), he put his floor tom in his lap and employed it almost like a talking drum.... | |
