| Vilsack calls for immediate end to Iraq war financing | | Posted Sunday, February 04, 2007 3:08:37 PM by Blog57 Team | | Presidential candidate and former Gov. Tom Vilsack painted himself as an outsider and a truth-teller before members of the Democratic National Committee on Saturday, calling for an immediate end to financing for the war in Iraq. While some contenders for the Democratic nomination have advocated a cap on troops, the Iowa Democrat said that represents staying the course rather than real change. As president, he would withdraw the troops and force Iraqis to take charge, he said. "Congress has the constitutional responsibility and a moral obligation to do it now," Vilsack said, to cheers, in a clear shot at opponents such as Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, who said Friday that there aren't the votes in Congress for a speedy pullout. "Those who voted for the war, those who voted to continue to support the war, those who voted to continue funding the war, can surely vote to stop the war," Vilsack said.... | |

| | | The elections are not over! | | Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 3:45:48 AM by Blog57 Team | | On MSNBC yesterday, Charlie Cook of the Cook Political Report said he believes the Republican Party is in a "meltdown" that will lead to a 20-seat pickup for Democrats in the U.S. House. (Democrats need to gain 15 seats to take control of the House.) With all due respect, I believe Mr. Cook is wrong. And I continue to believe that conservative Christians hold the key to this election. (Column continues below) If we ? the people the media like to call the "religious right" ? get out the vote and support those candidates that best exemplify our Judeo-Christian values, I believe that conservative incumbents and candidates across this country will surprise the experts. I don't believe the scandals involving Rep. Mark Foley and now Rev. Ted Haggard will affect the election, even though the so-called mainstream media have attempted to make them hot-button issues.... | |

| | | NBC to Move MSNBC to NYC; Cut 700 Jobs | | Posted Monday, October 23, 2006 7:09:05 AM by Blog57 Team | | NBC said Thursday that it plans to shut down MSNBC's Secaucus, N.J., headquarters and move operations for the all-news channel to New York and Englewood Cliffs, N.J. The company added that it will cut 700 employees as part of the shakeup at its news division and a broad NBC 2.0 initiative, which it said would "assure future growth, streamline and strengthen operations and exploit opportunities created by the rapidly evolving digital and global marketplace." NBC said the moves are expected to reduce its annual administrative and operating expenses by $750 million by the end of 2008. The company will also look to distribute TV programming through new platforms, saying that it will create "new windows or opportunities in the traditional syndication market" and develop "alternative advertising metrics." .... | |

| | | MSNBC: Pelosi Blocks Hastert From Naming Freeh To Overhaul Page ... | | Posted Monday, October 09, 2006 1:17:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | Denny Hastert, it turns out, reached out to ex-FBI Director Louis Freeh. He wanted him to head up an overhaul of the page program, but it's not going to happen now, for the time being anyway. Hastert gave a call to Nancy Pelosi in Washington today. Nancy Pelosi said no, that's not good enough. We don't want an overhaul of the page program. We need a more thorough investigation. That's something that both Democratic and Republican aides that I've just spoken to agree on, that Pelosi refused. So Freeh, for the time being, will not be heading up, as other news organizations have been reporting, will not be heading up…a probe, or an overhaul…of the page program here in the House. .... | |

| | | Now, Even Allen's Apologies Are Getting Him in Trouble | | Posted Friday, September 29, 2006 7:17:25 PM by Blog57 Team | | RICHMOND, Sept. 28 -- Sen. George Allen can't seem to win: first, he apologizes for addressing an Indian American with a racial slur and acknowledges that many view the Confederate flag as a hate symbol. Now, the Sons of Confederate Veterans want him to apologize, too. As he fights Democrat James Webb for a second term in the Senate, Allen has spent the last six weeks battling charges of racism after calling a young Indian American man "macaca" and later being accused of having used a racial epithet toward blacks. .... | |

| | | MSNBC Is Bringing Barbaro Back | | Posted Sunday, September 17, 2006 7:22:03 AM by Blog57 Team | | We don't know what possessed MSNBC to dig up two-month-old Barbaro content today, but they did. And the specific column that they decided to dust off for readers is a doozy. Here now is Bernie Lincicome of the Rocky Mountain News, who tapped out a heartfelt ode to everyone's favorite injured steed on July 19, which we're quite sure wasn't meant to be ironic, although we had to read it twice to be sure. Our favorite graph: Well, a crippled Tiny Tim thawed the icy heart of Scrooge, after all. And Barbaro has less a chance of ever walking right again. God bless us, every one. Honestly, sports columnists are the best. Uncorrupted Barbaro Is Our New Hero [MSNBC] Deadspin HOF Nominee; Barbaro [Deadspin] .... | |

In response, Barrett pointed out that the World Trade Center complex "was at the top of the vulnerability list that [Giuliani's] own police department prepared." During the September 1 edition of MSNBC News Live, anchor and MSNBC chief Washington correspondent Norah O'Donnell -- discussing former New York City Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani's performance before, during, and after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- asked Village Voice senior editor Wayne Barrett, "[Y]ou can't honestly say he [Giuliani] could have predicted that that area [the World Trade Center (WTC) complex] would have been attacked?" In response, Barrett, who was on to discuss his new book (written with CBSNews.com senior producer Dan Collins), Grand Illusion: The Untold Story of Rudy Giuliani and 9/11 (HarperCollins, August 2006), told O'Donnell that the WTC complex "was at the top of the vulnerability list that [Giuliani's] own police department prepared.... | |

| | | Read any good books lately? | | Posted Sunday, August 27, 2006 3:17:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | MSNBC has posted nominees for The Quill Awards, which honor the year's best books. Log on to vote for the authors, which include King Dork's Frank Portman (in the young adult/teen category), Fun Home's Alison Bechdel (in the graphic novel category) and The Year of Magical Thinking's Joan Didion (in biography/memoir). Thanks to Deborah R. for the tip. Here are a few good books I've read/started reading recently: - I Love Led Zeppelin by Ellen Forney. The title's kind of a misnomer, since the band has nothing to do with this book of Forney's one-page comics. My favorites are the "how to" stories, which include helpful hints on how to reattach a severed finger, among other activities. This one definitely isn't for kids or sensitive readers, though: I should note that the subtitle is, ahem, Panty-Dropping Comics.... | |

| | | What Is In The Water At MSNBC? | | Posted Monday, August 21, 2006 9:13:22 PM by Blog57 Team | | You would think the people at MSNBC could find someone better than Joe Scarborough and Tucker Carlson to represent the conservative/Republican point of view on their network. For that matter, they could do a lot better on the liberal/Democrat side of the aisle than the always exasperated motor mouth Chris Matthews and conspiracy theory thumper, Keith Olbermann. Here is the latest from Scarborough:For 10 minutes, the talk show host grilled his guests about whether "George Bush's mental weakness is damaging America's credibility at home and abroad." For 10 minutes, the caption across the bottom of the television screen read, "IS BUSH AN 'IDIOT'?" But the host was no liberal media elitist. It was Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman turned MSNBC political pundit. And his answer to the captioned question was hardly "no." While other presidents have been called stupid, Scarborough said: "I think George Bush is in a league by himself.... | |
