| Prep roundup: SPASH hockey rolls | | Posted Friday, January 26, 2007 3:20:27 PM by Blog57 Team | | RHINELANDER -- Picking a top performer would be next to impossible for the Stevens Point Area Senior High boys hockey team Thursday night. That's because just about every player had a monster game as the second-ranked Panthers routed Rhinelander 12-1 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference matchup. That was especially true for the top line of Scott Pavelski, Alex Molski and Travis Erstad who combined for 10 goals and nine assists among the trio. The win enabled the Panthers to move a step closer to clinching the conference title after imporving to 17-0 and 13-0 in the Valley. "The easy thing for these guys to do after that big game with Wisconsin Rapids was to lay an egg tonight," SPASH coach Wil Nichol said. "But these guys were machine-like tonight." Pavelski enjoyed the biggest night of all with four goals, including a natural hat trick -- three straight goals in the same period -- in the second stanza, and four assists.... | |

| | | ACCEPTED | | Posted Saturday, November 04, 2006 3:44:14 PM by Blog57 Team | | After being rejected by eight colleges, Ohio teen Bartleby Gaines (Justin Long) invents his own college out of thin air, initially creating a fake Web site and letterhead. Then with $10,000 in tuition money from his parents, he and some friends rent a decrepit psychiatric hospital and transform it into a fake campus. They devise a student-directed curriculum that encompasses skateboarding, sunbathing, blending mixed drinks, etc. (Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle.) | | | Luke Winn: Postcard from Wisconsin | | Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006 7:13:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | MADISON, Wis. -- Alando Tucker is driving with the Kohl Center in his rearview mirror, his white Dodge Intrepid auto-piloting a stretch of Dayton Street that he's traveled at least a thousand times since joining the Badgers in 2002. His five-year career has spanned from the end of the Devin Harris era through a medical redshirt and the Badgers' Elite Eight run in 2005 to this, his final season, in which the UW is forecasted in the top 15 of most national polls. Surveying the student pedestrians on a chilly Thursday evening, the 6-foot-6forward says, "It's funny; I just ride around, and look at everything here and sometimes think, 'I'm old.'" Tucker's status as the team's elder statesman, as well as his rank as UW's leading returning scorer (at 19.0 ppg) and the no-brainer pick as preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, give him the cred to put the 2006-07 Badgers in perspective.... | |

| | | Guineas hotpot sizzles at Caulfield | | Posted Tuesday, October 10, 2006 7:17:19 PM by Blog57 Team | | COURT Command's Caulfield Guineas claims were enhanced yesterday morning after a solid workout on the track went without a hitch. The Darren Smith-trained rising star - with wins in the Up And Coming Stakes, Golden Rose and Stan Fox Stakes at his past three starts - galloped on the outside of the track with race jockey Darryl McLellan in the saddle. "He handled the track perfectly," said McLellan, who worked Court Command over 1000 metres, quickening from the 800m and covering the final 400m in a tick over 22 seconds. Smith said Court Command had lost 10 kilograms during its trip from Newcastle to Melbourne last week but "he's put that back on". "He had a bit of a blow after the gallop and it was just what he needed," Smith said. "The pleasing part of the workout was the way he skipped around the place.... | |

| | | OMC Recommends: Stuff we like right now | | Posted Thursday, October 05, 2006 1:13:54 PM by Blog57 Team | | Welcome to the first installment of "OMC Recommends," a periodic look at cool things that we like and think you should know about. Use the Talkback feature to let us know what you think of our picks and if you'd like to add some of your own, e-mail them to omcrecommends@staff.onmilwaukee.com. "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" -- It's only run a few episodes so far, but the show's pretty great. Aaron Sorkin's sparkling writing is witty, clever and funny, and Matthew Perry comes off a surlier, darker version of Chandler -- minus those lame friends of his on "Friends." But more important, "Studio 60" is "Sports Night" reborn. The pacing, cinematography and damn near identical plot lines are as close as we're gonna get to a return of TV's greatest drama. Amanda Peet overdoes it a bit, and that will need to change if the show is to become a hit.... | |

| | | Robinson looking forward as Orange near season-opener | | Posted Friday, September 01, 2006 9:21:24 PM by Blog57 Team | | Syracuse University's football team is coming off the worst season in its history, and everyone wants to know if the Orange will be better. So does Greg Robinson, who won just one of 11 games in his first campaign as a head coach after a long and distinguished career as a National Football League assistant. He'll find out, or at least get a good idea, when SU opens its 117th season Saturday at Wake Forest. "I'm looking forward to seeing where we're at," Robinson said Tuesday. "We've worked extremely hard. We're a better football team than we were." It goes without saying that they'd better be. An anemic offense, ranked 115th out of 117 in Division I, was the biggest problem last year, and it remains to be seen whether it has been muscled up or not.... | |

| | | Tiger tumbles from lead | | Posted Sunday, August 27, 2006 3:24:15 AM by Blog57 Team | | Tiger Woods has struggled to a one-over-par 71 in the third round of the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio but is still ominously poised for his fourth consecutive tour victory, just one shot behind leader Stewart Cink. Leading by a shot at nine-under after the second round, Woods fell behind by as much as four strokes when he shot four straight bogeys - for the first time since 1996 - from the fifth hole, before recovering with two birdies on the back nine to get to eight-under for the tournament. Cink, who was given a Ryder Cup wild card earlier this week, shot a bogey-free round of 64 to grab the lead at nine-under. The 2004 champion leads Davis Love III (70), Englishman Paul Casey (64) and Woods, with another American, Jim Furyk (69), on seven-under.... | |

| | | Beulah Returns To ECW, Update On Refs, & More Notes | | Posted Monday, August 21, 2006 9:42:56 AM by Blog57 Team | | Beulah made an appearance at last night's ECW house show in White Plains, NY. She got into a catfight with Kelly Kelly. It is believed that Beulah appeared on the show because it is close to her home. A return to ECW isn't likely to occur as Beulah has repeatedly said that she doesn't want to come back to wrestling full time and that she is very happy to stay at home and raise her children. Ariel (Shelly Martinez) has posted a blog entry on her MySpace page detailing how she was starstuck when she met actor Luke Perry backstage at last Tuesday's Smackdown/ECW tapings. John Finnegan was the referee in a few matches at this past weekend's ECW house shows. WWE officials originally wanted to do away with some of the "ECW originals" including other referees, Atlas Security and ring announcer Stephen DeAngelis, but it looks like at least one person will be sticking around.... | |
