A special exhibit highlighting recently excavated fossils alongside original works of art by students, faculty and staff of East Tennessee State University is now on display at the B. Carroll Reece Museum in a partnership show pairing the Reece with the ETSU Museum of Natural History and Gray Fossil Site. Open to the public until March 29, "Artistic R-evolution: The Courtship Behavior Between Art and Science" features ancient remains unearthed at the Gray Fossil Site and artwork exploring various themes of the soon-to-be-completed ETSU Museum of Natural History - evolution, ecosystems, fossils, the environment, nature and biodiversity. Located at the site near the I-26 Gray exit, the museum opens this summer. "Science and art are natural and complementary partners," says Jeanne L....

Still pulling 'em in

More than a half-century after his death, fans are still paying homage to country music icon Hank Williams. His boyhood home, a museum in Montgomery and the cemetery where he and his wife are buried attract a steady stream of fans, including visitors from England, Japan and other places around the world. A new brochure is due out Wednesday listing these and other sites on what the Alabama Bureau of Tourism & Travel calls the "Hank Williams Trail.""I enjoy all country western music and Hank is one of the best," said Guyla Hornsby, who visited Williams' grave last summer with her husband, Preston. "I didn't know what to expect, but it's pretty neat."Williams' driver found him dead at age 29 on Jan. 1, 1953, in the back seat of his Cadillac en route to a gig in Ohio. While the cause of death is still a subject of controversy, his short career had been marred by heavy drinking and use of painkillers for a back condition.Williams' hits included a dozen singles at No....

Shades of gray on green issue

Winning the environmental vote is typically not a challenge for Democrats running in a state that is known as the greenest in the nation. But this election year, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has gained an edge. Top Democrats have called him a ''visionary.'' Environmental groups have praised his leadership. He has bucked opposition from business groups by signing a global warming bill they opposed. That has left his opponent, Democrat Phil Angelides, struggling to catch up on an issue typically identified with his party. The state treasurer has highlighted his record of progressive investments as head of the state's pension system and downplayed his record as a developer who made millions expanding the suburban sprawl around the state capital....

Gray breaks from pack on expansion

Lexington should consider putting a four-year moratorium on expansion of its urban service boundary and use the time to plan for smarter growth, at-large Urban County Council candidate Jim Gray said yesterday. Five of the six candidates vying for the three at-large council seats in next month's election have generally opposed immediate expansion of the boundary, but Gray is the first to suggest an outright halt. "I think we should perhaps put a moratorium on expanding the boundary for four years, at minimum, and deal with the problems we've got," Gray said as the at-large council candidates discussed issues yesterday morning at a meeting of the Lexington Forum at Keeneland. Gray, a construction company executive, contended that past development planning in Lexington "has not been nearly as effective as it could be," arguing that officials must do better next time....

DVD Review: Dallas - The Complete Fifth Season
Posted Friday, September 01, 2006 5:21:12 PM by Blog57 Team
For the time in which it first aired, Dallas was one of the raciest shows on primetime television. As a child of the 80s, now in my late-20s I grew up watching Dallas, or rather my mother watched it while I was getting ready for bed. However, all these years later, I have to admit I hold a special place in my heart for the show. The actors were amazing, especially since they were television actors, and the storylines were tumultuous enough to be remembered nearly two decades later. Dallas: The Complete Fifth Season was an excellent season to watch because several of the show’s main plotlines had already been established. As a viewer, you were well aware of what you would be getting when you turned on the television on Friday nights, and this season was full of shocking moments and unexpected surprises.Right from the start, the ultimate Southfork drama occurs....

Attorney Point

Last week's Loose Lips column raised some interesting points about the timing of Chairman Linda Cropp's discussion of Councilman Adrian Fenty's mishandling of his elderly clients' money and subsequent discipline by the D.C. Bar ("Cropp's Missed Opportunity," 8/18). More important, the story raises significant considerations in this year's mayoral election. Fenty attempts to minimize the severity of the D.C. Bar's discipline, stating simply (and repeatedly) that "there has only been one case that there has ever been a problem with." Fenty's response is not only incomplete but should speak volumes about his ability to lead the District. First, the "problem" that Fenty attempts to minimize deals with the core of his duties as a lawyer: basic competence. I respectfully submit that a core issue like competency in one's profession is not something to be dismissed lightly....

White House Project gives women the tools to run for office
Posted Monday, August 21, 2006 5:41:55 AM by Blog57 Team
This year, 55 came, some white, some African American, some Asian and Hispanic. Most are Democrats but some are Republicans and independents. And all of them are women. Between Friday and Sunday night, under an inclusive and figurative tent pitched on Bainbridge Island by The White House Project, they reported for possible duty at an event called "Go Run," where, in "debate boot camps," they learned they don't have to talk fast and politely ensure that everyone gets a turn to have their say. They listened to female victors of the campaign wars who told them they don't have to abandon their families or their ethics to be elected. And that, while the best-qualified women candidates are still not shoo-ins, the more they are willing to put their feet forward, the less the public and the press is apt to focus on their shoes....
