Today, while most of the country takes a break from working to be with friends and family, there are those who treat this like any other Monday. They have to work.Patrolman Rodney Crouch of the Clayton County Police Department said he actually enjoys working on holidays."I schedule my personal life around holidays. I look forward to working those days because those are some of the most dangerous days," Crouch said.He said that he has worked every holiday since he became an officer more than two years ago."I feel like I can really help on holidays. Traditionally there is more drinking, (during the Labor Day weekend) and I like to diffuse some of those situations. And of course getting these drunk drivers off the street is important."Joshua Barton of Stockbridge knows that while his family is out barbecuing, he'll be decorating pizzas for six hours today.Barton, the head cook, has worked at the Jonesboro Pizza Hut for three years and has worked on just about every holiday....

Record number of locals qualify for Summer Games

One of the benefits of hosting the 2004 Alberta Summer Games is that it sparked a renewed interest in sports in local athletes which is evident in the number of locals who have qualified for the Alberta Summer Games. Last Friday Alberta Sport and Rec released the names of the athletes who will represent Zone 2 (Big Country) at the 2004 Alberta Summer Games which will be held in Okotoks, High River and the MD of Foothills. Competing on their home turf 124 athletes and 16 coaches from the foothills region will be participating the upcoming Summer Games. Games chair Diane Turner said the record number of local athletes is a direct result of having the Summer Games at home. "Because we are hosting the Games we had more local kids try-out (for the various events)," said Turner at the volunteer rally last Thursday in Okotoks....

A trove of clues at DAR library

It has been 17 years since I visited the library at the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters in Washington - and it was worth the wait. Not that I came home with great gobs of new information on my ancestors. I didn't, though I observed many a Daughter rushing to the copy machine to document new "finds." But I did bring home a few clues I hope will take me further in my research, and I spent every spare moment during the annual DAR Continental Congress squirreled away in the NSDAR Library. The stacks are easy to browse with books organized by family over here, by state over there. I headed for New York, Greene County, to look for my forebears from Windham, Durham, Cairo and Hunter - the surnames Bray, Hill, Payne and Doolittle, my Connecticut Yankees. In particular, I wanted to look at "Greene Genes," bound volumes of a newsletter that historian Patricia Morrow published for several years....
