Jed Drake, an ESPN senior vice president, knew Thursday that it was "37 days and counting to the Busch Race at Daytona." Then, for the first time in six years, ESPN will present a NASCAR race. "We fully intend to deliver and make this a perfect marriage between NASCAR and ESPN," Drake said. He rattled off all the ESPN properties that will highlight NASCAR, such as ESPN2, ESPN on ABC, ESPN Classic, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, ESPN the magazine and on and on. ....

East Texas Baptist University football student-athletes Chad Glover and Doug Carlton have been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team in the District VI College Division, released Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Sports information directors from around the country may nominate their players who have a current grade-point average of 3.2 or higher for the All-District team. Members of the CoSIDA vote on the Academic All-America squads. CoSIDA members weigh a student-athlete's academic, athletic and community service accomplishments. Both Glover and Carlton were named to the District 6 first-team, making them eligible to be on the Academic All-America ballot. Glover, a senior defensive end from Whitehouse, is majoring in Secondary Education/Life Science and just completed a record-setting four-year career with the Tigers....

Former ESPN Baseball Analyst Reynolds Sues Network Over Firing

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) -- Former ESPN baseball analyst Harold Reynolds sued the Walt Disney Co. for at least $5 million, saying its ESPN unit breached its contract when it fired him in July. Reynolds, who worked at ESPN for 11 years after a 12-year Major League Baseball career, was fired July 24, four months after signing a new six-year contract worth about $1 million per year. ``I have tried everything possible to handle this situation quietly behind the scenes,'' Reynolds said in a statement. ``After numerous conversations and multiple mediation discussions with ESPN executives it is clear that ESPN had no intention of solving this problem amicably.'' Reynolds claims in his complaint, filed yesterday in state court in New Britain, Connecticut, that ESPN failed to give a reason for firing him and didn't properly investigate an allegation about his giving a female intern what he called ``an innocuous hug.'' ``It is unfortunate that ESPN has handled this process in an unprofessional manner,'' Reynolds said....

As Mobile ESPN falls, a Helio rises

The top guns at Walt Disney Co. had every reason to think they had a winner when they launched a wireless service, Mobile ESPN, on Super Bowl Sunday earlier this year. That's because major U.S. cell phone operators like Verizon (Charts) and Sprint Nextel (Charts) have become so big and their customer acquisition costs so high that they've been more than happy to lease their networks to anyone willing to chase after niche customers. In return, the carriers get a share of the new subscriber revenue. ....

ESPN,: The baby boy

It's a safe bet that whether or not young ESPN Montana Real of D'Iberville grows into a rabid sports fan like his dad, he'll at least make it to first base with Real's coaching. ESPN Montana Real, born on Monday at Biloxi Regional, is the first son of Rusty and Leann Real. Somewhere along the line, Leann promised her hubby if they ever had a son, he could pick the name. He chose ESPN (pronounced Espen) after the sports network and Montana after football legend Joe Montana. Theirs is not the country's first child named ESPN, either. Three others were cited in a 2005 Web story at tivocommunity.com, about the network's 25th anniversary. They are Espn Malachi McCall in Pampa, Texas; Espn Curiel in Corpus Christi, Texas; and Espn Blondeel in Michigan....

BASS gets platform on ESPN

Flip the channel on your television to ESPN, and you will get a good look at the changing face of fishing. Bass boats plastered with the colorful designs of sponsors speed across lakes during Bassmaster national tournaments, creating a NASCAR-like scene on the water. Helicopters carrying film crews hover overhead, cameramen ride along with contenders to get action footage, and reporters do color segments on fishermen. See that guy with the tattoos, break-dancing on the weigh-in stage and getting in the face of the bass he catches? That's Mike Iaconelli, one of the new wave of fishermen attracting a wild following. Local fishermen follow their heroes when they head out in the morning, hoping to get a glimpse of the pros in action. Bass fishing, a spectator sport? Don't laugh....

Florida got an earful from ESPN broadcasters

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Gators might be loved in Gainesville, but they didn't get much respect from ESPN before facing Tennessee on Saturday night. The ESPN GameDay guys weren't very kind to the Gators, picking the Florida-Tennessee game as one of the closest games of the weekend. Lee Corso was the most critical, taking a shot at UF coach Urban Meyer and his team. ``I don't know if Florida is tough enough to go into that Tennessee place,'''' he said. ``They're soft and I don't know if they can stand it.'''' FAMILIAR CALL How about this one? Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer, who has had his problems with Alabama, taking a page from Crimson Tide coach Mike Shula''s playbook. Fulmer obviously liked the way Shula opened up against the Gators in a 31-3 victory against UF last season....

Espn Touts Its Best Day Ever

ESPN claimed Tuesday that its takeover of Monday Night Football produced its biggest audience ever -- some 9.1 million viewers. ESPN also noted that it was the second biggest audience ever to watch a cable telecast. Nevertheless, today's (Wednesday) New York Times observed that the telecast produced "noticeably fewer viewers" than previous NFL telecasts on ABC television -- off 36 percent from the season opener of ABC's Monday Night Football last year. USA Today observed that the telecast drew fewer viewers than ABC's concluding episode of The Path to 9/11 miniseries, which was watched by 12.3 million people. 13/09/2006 ....

NEW YORK -- The Big East Conference and ESPN agreed Tuesday to a pair of six-year deals to extend coverage of football and men's and women's basketball through 2013. A total of 17 football games each season, the most in conference history, will be carried on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC. Four Big East games will be featured on ESPN's Thursday night package, and at least one game will air on the Saturday Prime Time series. Two games will be shown Sunday nights on ESPN, and one game will appear on Championship Saturday in December. "Television exposure is critical to the success of our teams," said Big East commissioner Michael Tranghese. "Our new agreement provides an incredible opportunity to take Big East programs to even greater heights." ESPN and ESPN2 will telecast a minimum of 60 men's basketball games each year, including 49 regular-season games and all 11 games of the Big East Championships....

ESPN, NBC will duke it out in prime time

The words were flying long before the first football was thrown in a training camp this summer, as the networks that will be televising weekly NFL prime-time games have been touting their product with a "mine is better'' boast. "Monday Night Football,'' which has been the marquee product in all of sports television, is moving from ABC to ESPN. And the Sunday night game switches from ESPN to NBC. "This becomes the centerpiece of Sunday night television in the United States," NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol said. ESPN, meanwhile, contends it has the premier package. ....
