| Bengals don't deserve to be a playoff team | | Posted Thursday, December 28, 2006 1:24:21 PM by Blog57 Team | | Maybe this is the way it should end. The Bengals lost when they had to win. They didn't lose because of a missed extra point, they lost because Chad Johnson dropped a pass and was moving before the snap on what would have been a 75-yard touchdown; it was because Chad, Rudi Johnson, and Carson Palmer fumbled; it was because Chris Henry short-armed another pass and the big players made big (but bad) plays. This team lost because it showed its lack of character. They will not be in the playoffs this year, and that is OK by me. Next year, I hope the coaches instill some discipline and require some commitment off the field. Trade the guys who got arrested, even if it results in less "talent." We had the talent to win, but not the character. Give us character next time, and we will be winners regardless of the record.... | |

| | | Harvick sweeps Phoenix; Johnson closes in on title | | Posted Monday, November 13, 2006 11:51:59 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Nextel Cup title is Jimmie Johnson's to lose. For anyone else, it would be a perfect position. But Johnson has been here before. Johnson lost two of these titles before, and nothing is guaranteed -- even after his second-place finish Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway gave him a firm hold atop the Chase for the championship leaderboard. He needs to only finish 12th or better next week in the season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to win the championship. "I seriously don't have any clue what to expect," Johnson said. "I don't have any strategy other than go down and finish ahead of (the other Chase drivers). It's just that simple. That's all we've done so far, through these last few months, and we're just going to go down there and do the same thing we've been doing." What Johnson has done is put together a nearly flawless five-race stretch to rescue his season.... | |

| | | Chiefs runner Larry Johnson another challenge to Rams | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 7:18:08 PM by Blog57 Team | | Slightly different initials, same challenge as the St. Louis Rams' defense now must face Kansas City running back Larry Johnson after being dissected by San Diego running back La'Dainian Tomlinson on Sunday. Tomlinson, known as "L.T.", racked up 240 yards of scrimmage and scored three touchdowns in the Chargers' 38-24 win over the Rams. "You can't sugar coat it," Rams coach Scott Linehan said. "You know what you were deficient at. They ran the ball right at us, and they were very successful. We've got to look at it as coaches, and do the best job we can to put guys in position to succeed. We've got to play better." Johnson, known as "L.J.," rushed for 155 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Chiefs' 35-28 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.... | |

| | | Bengals' Johnson calls for bolder offense | | Posted Thursday, October 19, 2006 7:12:29 AM by Blog57 Team | | Chad Johnson's demeanor these days -- no boasts, no guarantees, no trash talk whatsoever -- matches the Cincinnati Bengals' mundane offense. And the Pro Bowl receiver says it's time for both to change. His solution: Throw caution to the wind and throw the ball long. Johnson was practically demur on Wednesday, flat-out refusing to bait the Carolina Panthers who will cover him this weekend, or make any predictions how things will turn out. Given the state of Cincinnati's offense, he couldn't even bring himself to brag. "Stuff is not going the same way it did last year, to where I can come out and be bold," he said. "We're not playing bold. We're not playing aggressive. So I can't be aggressive. I've got to feel it. "I can't come up and say, 'Man, we're going to go out and torch these guys,' and we go 75 plays in the game and have one explosive play.... | |

| | | YET ANOTHER CHANCE FOR JOHNSON TO EARN 'STRIPES | | Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 3:11:12 AM by Blog57 Team | | WE KNOW now that Randy Johnson is never going to be the pitcher the Yankees thought they were obtaining, an April-through-October dominator. That is fine now. They don't need that today. All they need is for him to be better than Kenny Rogers. A lot better. The Yankees are now in the same precarious spot as last year, tied at a game apiece in the Division Series and - on paper anyway - having a huge Game 3 starting pitching edge. But in Game 3 last year, the Angels' Paul Byrd pitched poorly, yet Johnson was even worse. The Yankees lost, when victory very likely would have meant advancement rather than the first-round ouster they suffered. Now Johnson is facing Rogers, who has been miserable in the playoffs and even worse against the Yankees. Maybe the Yankee offense will take care of everything by brutalizing Rogers, who usually looks as calm in October as someone on the run in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.... | |

| | | Johnson Aims To Sink Next Employers | | Posted Monday, September 25, 2006 7:10:00 AM by Blog57 Team | | Paul Johnson is hoping to bring down the curtain on his Bradford career with a third successive appearance at Old Trafford - even though that will dash the Grand Final hopes of his new club Warrington. The former Wigan centre or second rower has signed a three-year deal with the Wolves from next season and will come face to face with many of his future team-mates when they visit Bradford in the engage Super League elimination semi-final on Saturday. Warrington clinched a first-ever play-off win, courtesy of Lee Briers' late drop goal, in a shock 18-17 win at Leeds on Friday, while the Bulls charged to a 52-6 rout of play-off debutants Salford at Odsal on Saturday. It is past versus present for the 27-year-old Johnson, who insists there will be no divided loyalties. "I'm looking forward to it, not just because it's Warrington," he said.... | |

| | | Cape Bonavista site celebrates International Lighthouse Day | | Posted Tuesday, August 29, 2006 5:10:22 AM by Blog57 Team | | Visitors love going to Cape Bonavista to explore the historic lighthouse and to discover how keepers and their families once lived and worked. The Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, like many others in the province and throughout the world, once played an important role for mariners. Today, with automation, the vast majority of lighthouses are no longer working models, but historic reminders of the past. In recognition of the role played by lighthouses, Aug.20 was designated as International Lighthouse Day. At the Cape Bonavista Historic Site, staff hosted an afternoon of activities and entertainment to commemorate the event. Over 600 people—with almost half that number local residents—took part in the activities, according to Museum Technician Don Johnson.... | |

| | | 150 Grambling Students Now Housed in Howard Johnson Inn | | Posted Wednesday, August 23, 2006 7:23:09 PM by Blog57 Team | | College freshman Carsha Maple has a key to one of the rooms at the Howard Johnson in Ruston, Louisiana. Right now, it's considered her dorm room at Grambling State University. "I didn't expect this. I have been told there were like 2300 incoming freshman so I guess they were expecting this kind of turnout," says Maple. Campus overcrowding is exactly why administrators say about 150 Grambling students now call the Howard Johnson home. School spokesman Ralph Wilson says there have been way more applications for housing than expected in the typical fall semester. "Because of the coast of fuel may students have recognized it's cheaper to live on campus, especially right now, than to live off campus,"says Wilson.... | |
