| Uganda: Kibaki's Payrise Shows Leaders' True Colours | | Posted Wednesday, December 13, 2006 1:25:22 PM by Blog57 Team | | It is unfortunate and unacceptable that Kenyan parliamentarians a few days ago increased President Mwai Kibaki's salary by about 70 per cent in spite of the daily challenges of life experienced by million of Kenyans who live on only less than $1 a day. This is typical for an African leader who having taken power, riding on the lofty promise to save his people from dire poverty and bad government only to dash those hopes and instead steal from the very mouths of those who voted for them. How does a president of a third world country with about 50 per cent of its population living in abject poverty, and barely able to defend themselves against the ravages of nature like severe droughts and floods, maintain a straight face with such earnings? Kibaki will now earn $528,000 (about Shs924 million) per annum.... | |

Yesterday, host Jon Stewart and members of his crew fielded questions from students at Ohio State University during a special appearance that was set up after spaces for four nights of tapings filled up. Stewart asked the crowd: "A buckeye is a gay acorn, right?" The audience roared when Stewart announced a party in his dorm room. Stewart says they chose Ohio for the "Midwest Midterm Midtacular" because it was such a key state in the 2004 election. Many big-name politicians have begged off on appearing. | | | Study shows "Daily Show" does real news | | Posted Friday, October 06, 2006 7:12:12 PM by Blog57 Team | | BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Jon Stewart may call "The Daily Show" fake news. But a telecommunications professor at Indiana University says her research shows it has just as much substance as traditional network news. Julia Fox points to real questions asked of guests like Pakistan's president, who last week said he doesn't know where Osama bin Laden is, and former Senator John Edwards, who announced he was running for president on the show. Fox says the Comedy Central program is first and foremost "clearly a humor show." But she adds there's also significant information being exchanged, calling it "a legitimate source of news." The first academic examination of Stewart's shtick is called "No Joke: A Comparison of Substance in The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Broadcast Network Television Coverage of the 2004 Presidential Election Campaign." | | | Once-a-Year Shot Shows Promise for Osteoporosis | | Posted Sunday, September 24, 2006 11:13:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Scientists report encouraging test results on an experimental, once-a-year treatment for bone-thinning osteoporosis. Preliminary study data from final stage human testing shows the drug, Reclast, appears to prevent spine and hip fractures even though it's given only once a year, eliminating the need for daily pills. The infusion takes about 15 minutes. A just-completed, international study of more than 7,700 postmenopausal women who have osteoporosis shows the drug also reduces the risk of fractures elsewhere. Novartis says side effects are generally minor and short-lived and says it plans to apply early next year for US approval to sell Reclast. The data was presented September 16th at the annual meeting of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research in Philadelphia.... | |

| | | Despite constraints, `Hollywoodland' shows dark side of TV's Man of Steel | | Posted Sunday, September 03, 2006 11:28:58 PM by Blog57 Team | | Superman fears energy-sapping kryptonite. Warner Bros. and DC Comics, a subsidiary of Time Warner, fear anything that could tarnish their Man of Steel's reputation or reveal him to have Clark Kent-like feet of clay. The movie ``Hollywoodland'' (opening Friday) does exactly that. The low-budget biopic -- set in the late 1950s and starring Ben Affleck as TV Superman George Reeves and Adrien Brody as a private eye investigating Reeves' suicide -- shows the actor to be an adulterer, a drunk and an industry laughingstock. It also floats the theory, via Brody's down-and-out gumshoe, that Reeves didn't commit suicide in 1959; that he was murdered by a jealous studio exec and that the Hollywood police and press not only bungled the investigation but also may have facilitated a coverup.... | |
