CNN was among those scoring an upset victory in this week's elections, claiming the most total viewers and the most in the adults 25-54 demographic group on Wednesday, both in primetime and total day compared to the Fox News Channel, the usual news leader. As on election night, the two cable news networks effectively wound up in a dead heat for the day, with CNN averaging 1,147,000 viewers and FNC 1,142,000, according to Nielsen figures, a difference of less than 1/2 percent. However, in the demo preferred by advertisers, CNN was the clear winner with an average of 425,000 viewers versus 379,000, a 12 percent difference. 10/11/2006 ....

A pediatric dentist's tricks for treat night

Halloween can be a scary time of year for dentists and orthodontists. Dr. Kaneta Lott, pediatric dentist, spoke with CNN medical correspondent Judy Fortin about the best and worst kind of treats and how to care for your children's teeth. Fortin: How do cavities form? Lott: Cavities are formed by the fact that we all have bacteria in our mouths. The bacteria take the food that we eat and use it as their food. When they use that food they produce an acid. That sticks to the tooth and the acid begins to dissolve the enamel. Fortin: What is the best way to prevent cavities? Lott: We need to start out preventing decay with babies. After that, it's not what you eat -- it is how many times a day you eat it. If I drink my soda within ten minutes and you drink your soda all day long, you're going to have more cavities than I will....

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Bush administration officials say there are indications that North Korea is preparing a second nuclear test, Cable News Network reported Tuesday. CNN, citing Bush administration officials, also said that there are now " reported statements" from senior North Korean military officials that North Korea intends to conduct multiple nuclear tests. The officials said that activity at a North Korean site is similar to that which preceded the country's nuclear test earlier this month, CNN reported. CNN said U.S. intelligence believes buildings and other structures are being built on the surface at a second site. That, CNN said, could be an indication that North Korea will try to conduct final preparations for a test without being seen by spy satellites....

Rutland Superintendent Blasts President Bush on CNN

Rutland Northeast Superintendent William Mathis appeared on CNN Thursday to criticize President Bush's signature education plan, the No Child Left Behind Act. The program is up for renewal next year and President Bush is pushing for Congress to renew it. Mathis has been very critical of the law that requires schools to meet stringent new standards in order to receive federal funding. He says the program is under funded and that the required tests do not adequately measure student performance. "I think that we're going to have to actually be a little more conservative in one sense, we need to get back to thinking and remembering that no one size fits all. The federal government has a one size fits all strategy. I think Vermont traditions of town meetings and locally elected boards is a very strong thing....

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The number of Americans who approve of U.S. military action in Afghanistan dropped to 56 percent in a CNN poll last month, down from 92 percent in November 2001. CNN today released results of a poll of 1,047 adult Americans, which Opinion Research Corp. conducted by telephone on Aug. 2 and 3. The poll's margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and ousted the Taliban regime that harbored the al-Qaeda terrorist forces that claimed responsibility for the Sept. 11 attacks. Many Taliban fighters have now returned or come out of hiding. Violence has increased as a U.S.-led coalition, troops of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Afghan military have cracked down on insurgents in more remote areas of the country....

IRAQ'S Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said overnight it "will not be long " before US troops can start withdrawing from his country but would not commit to a timetable. Mr Maliki told CNN Iraqi security forces were growing stronger alongside the 138,000 US troops still in Iraq nearly three-and-a-half years after the invasion to oust Saddam Hussein. "The more our security agencies have developed, the less the period will be for the (American) forces to remain," Mr Maliki said through an interpreter. "And I think this period will not be long because we have begun to have security responsibility in the provinces," he said, according to the translation provided by CNN. But Mr Maliki would not be drawn into a discussion of exactly when the Americans could think about leaving the country, beset with escalating sectarian violence as well as a stubborn insurgency....
