ABC Morning News Gets Name Change
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 3:44:46 AM by Blog57 Team
(Broadcasting & Cable) _ ABC News is changing the name of World News This Morning to America This Morning effective Monday (Nov. 13). The move is not to suggest that the early morning broadcast (4:30-5 a.m.) will shift from news of the world to news of the Americas. Instead, is it meant to distinguish the brand from World News (which previously goits owname change from World News Tonight) and to convey the sense of looking forward to Good Morning America rather than recapping the previous night's news. "When the broadcast first debuted more than two decades ago it was, in many ways, an extension ofWorld News,' providing a wrap-up of the previous day's top stories," said ABC News President David Westin in announcing the change. "As news gathering and viewing habits have evolved, the program has established itself as a leader in early morning newws...The new title will more accurately reflect the position and purpose of this broadcast to present a first look at the day's national, international, and business news." In addition, Nancy Han, senior broadcast producer, has been named executive producer or early morning news content, which includes America This Morning, World News Now, and news in Good Morning America....

Senate badgering 'a threat' to ABC
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 1:37:15 PM by Blog57 Team
Attempts by politicians to bring the ABC into line were reminiscent of apartheid South Africa or Stalinist Russia, one of the broadcaster's leading stars said yesterday. Enough Rope host Andrew Denton, in his first public criticisms of attacks on the ABC, warned that escalating government pressure and continued efforts to control it could mean that the broadcaster's independence would be lost forever. Stressing the ABC's statutory independence from government, Denton said he thought "the attempts to use the Senate to individually badger, line by line, the things people say [on the ABC] is a very worrisome development and one we may have expected to see in, say apartheid South Africa or Stalinist Russia." Denton's comments come amid tension at the national broadcaster over claims of bias, with chief executive and editor-in-chief Mark Scott announcing a new "director of editorial policies" position....

Strict new rules aimed at preventing bias creeping into any ABC programs, from children's shows to news and current affairs, have been branded as unnecessary and demoralising by staff. The new rules were unveiled by ABC managing director Mark Scott, who said they would apply across the national broadcaster's full gamut of TV, radio and online programs. A new internal watchdog will also be appointed to deal with complaints about the broadcaster and review programs for bias. But ABC staff, their union and Labor are less than impressed, questioning how the editorial rules can be enforced for drama, comedy and children's shows. "This is outrageous, it's just another attack upon the ABC and its independence," Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) national secretary Stephen Jones said....

Reynolds aide tried to block Foley story

WASHINGTON A top aide to Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds last week approached ABC News to try to get its investigative unit to withhold sexually explicit instant messages that now-disgraced Rep. Mark Foley sent to teenage boys who worked as pages in the House. Kirk Fordham, Reynolds' chief of staff, acknowledged in an interview Tuesday that he approached ABC News investigative reporter Brian Ross last Friday with an offer: Ross would get the exclusive story on Foley's resignation from Congress in exchange for withholding those salacious instant messages. Fordham said he never discussed the offer with Reynolds. Instead, Fordham said he acted in an effort to shield Foley's family, especially his elderly parents, from the lurid contents of the instant messages. Politics "was not even a factor in my consideration," Fordham said....

NEW YORK -- ABC faced growing pressure about its planned miniseries on the buildup to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Former Clinton administration officials, historians and a Democratic petition with nearly 200,000 signatures urged the network to scrap the five-hour drama. The network said "The Path to 9.11," scheduled to air commercial-free on Sunday and Monday, is being edited to deal with concerns that it distorts history. ABC had no response to the calls to abandon it.A group of historians, including Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and Princeton University's Sean Wilentz, wrote to ABC parent Walt Disney Co. CEO Robert Iger, urging him to scrap the series. They said that permitting inaccuracies to heighten drama is "disingenuous and dangerous." ....

ABC documentary angers PNG's Health Minister

ELEANOR HALL: Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare has criticised the Australian Government's assessment of his country's future. Yesterday, in announcing a boost in Australia's troop numbers, John Howard referred to "the inherently unstable situation in Papua New Guinea." And it's not the only comment from Australia to rile Port Moresby officials. The Papua New Guinea Health Minister has criticised the ABC for what he calls cheap journalism and misrepresentation of the facts. Sir Peter Barter said a documentary about Papua New Guinea's HIV/AIDS epidemic by ABC TV's 4 Corners program had damaged the relationship between Australia and Papua New Guinea and placed future ABC documentaries in PNG in doubt. Correspondent Steve Marshall reports from Port Moresby....

Posthumous report from Peter Jennings

A year after he died, Peter Jennings will be seen on camera next week as part of an ABC News documentary about AIDS that he was working on when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. The program, "Out of Control: AIDS in Black America," was completed with Terry Moran as anchor and is scheduled for 10 p.m. next Thursday. "This is the last piece of original reporting from Peter that will ever appear on American television," said Tom Yellin, president and executive producer of The Documentary Group. That's the successor to PJ Productions, Jennings' production company. Jennings was interested in examining the issue after a pitch from Betsey Arledge, a producer and daughter of late ABC News and Sports president Roone Arledge, made him realize how little he knew about the extent to which AIDS has spread among black people....
